Burning Tips The Connoisseur’s Guide to Candle Panache Avoiding Soot: Soot is a product of incomplete combustion. Results of recent experiments have shown that certain candles can produce up to 100 times more soot than low-soot producing candles. Although soy wax burns much cleaner, the all cotton wick may cause some soot. Also, if you light the candle with a typical lighter (even a budget candle lighter) the flame usually paints the jar black. Use a candle lighter with an adjustable flame that can be kept only large enough to light the wick, not blacken the jar. Keep your wick trimmed to ¼” every time you burn. Finally, avoid burning in drafts. If your jar becomes blackened for any reason, simply extinguish the flame and carefully wipe the rim. When the candle is completed, the jar can be washed out with soap and water for re-use. Burning time: Quality paraffin candles typically burn 5-6 hours per ounce. Soyfire candles burn up to 10 hours per ounce. Two wick candles are analogous to burning two candles at once (Twice the candle, half the burn time). Storing Candles: Candles are sensitive to temperature and light, so be careful when storing them for any extended period of time. Avoid color fading, melting or cracking by storing candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or florescent light. Storage temperature should not exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit or fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to moisture may inhibit relighting. Follow these guidelines when traveling as well; extreme temperatures in your car can easily melt or freeze candles. More Burning Instructions: Prior to burning, remove and recycle packaging. Never leave a burning candle unattended (the candle always knows). Keep burning candles away from flammable materials (such as curtains and centerpieces). Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets (and wagging tails). No need to trim wicks, only remove the little mushroom that forms on top of wick. Burn candles in or on suitable holders, on heat resistant surfaces – not directly on furniture. Don’t place candles too close to other heat sources including other candles. Keep wax melt pool free of wick trimmings, matches, or any combustible material. Keep the wick centered. If the candle you purchased has a wick too far off-centered, you may return or exchange the candle. Avoid burning candles in drafts which cause faster burning, dripping and soot. Extinguish candles (don't blow out) with a quencher to avoid smoke and wax splatter. Jar Candles: Glass containers are fragile, handle with care and don’t use if cracked or chipped. Jar may become hot to the touch, handle with care. Don’t allow flame to touch side of jar. Although soy wax burns cooler than paraffin, glass may still become very hot. Do not burn the last ½ of wax if jar is getting hot – it may break. To avoid tunneling (leaving wax left on sides of jar), burn candle until the wax pool reaches the edge of the jar each time. Some tunneling is expected, the amount varies with color, fragrance and burning situation. Pillar Candles: The goal with soy pillars is to tunnel (burn a hole down the center), making its own container. Burn candle until 1/4-1/2” remains around the edge. Trim the waste when the tunnel reaches about 1” in depth, leaving you a brand new albeit shorter candle to enjoy again. Allow candle to cool and harden before trimming excess wax or relighting. Discontinue use when ½” of wax remains. Taper Candles: Be sure tapers are straight and set firmly in their holders. Candle snuggers are available at Soyfire Candle. To prevent dripping: avoid drafts and nearby heat sources (which includes other candles too close together) and do not burn for more than 3 hours at a time. Hurricane lanterns block drafts, but may cause dripping due to the buildup of heat. Tea Lights: Soyfire tea lights typically burn up to 8 hours each. Don’t burn scented tea lights in an enclosed space like a potpourri pot, rather use unscented tea lights and be sure its ventilated. Votives: Votives are made to liquefy; burn them only in appropriate holders that support the sides. You should get about 20 hours from a votive.
